Goodwood & America

A 250-year relationship

Before America was America

Goodwood’s relationship with the United States is nothing new. It predates the nation itself. The 3rd Duke of Richmond was one of Britain’s most outspoken champions of American independence, condemning the government’s conduct during the War of Independence when such views amounted to treason. In a remarkable act of defiance, The Duke sailed his yacht through a Royal Navy fleet during King George III’s review of the vessels, flying the flag of independence in full view of the King.

The document that started it all

The 3rd Duke was an early patron of political philosopher Thomas Paine, and is credited with introducing him to Benjamin Franklin — a meeting that would change the course of history, prompting Paine to emigrate to America. In recognition of the Duke's unwavering support for the American cause, he was gifted a rare parchment manuscript copy of the Declaration of Independence in 1787.

Kindred spirits on the track

A shared love of motorsport deepened the relationship between Goodwood and America. Since the golden era of the 1950s and 60s, the stars of American road racing have graced Goodwood. American drivers, teams and machines are a defining feature of Revival and Festival of Speed, showcasing their legendary spirit of performance, innovation and spectacle in West Sussex.
